Moving Text Illusion (Ambigram Tessellation) by BatmanWithBunnyEars Moving Text Illusion (Ambigram Tessellation) by BatmanWithBunnyEars
This is an ambigram tessellation of the words “Amish Mafia.” There are two illusions to be seen in this one image.

1. Each upside down item is the same exact image as a right side up one, just rotated 180 degrees. However, the right side up items appear convex while the upside down ones appear concave, because we naturally assume the light comes from the top of the picture and interpret the shading accordingly.

2. If you move your eyes across the image, the items in your periphery appear to move slightly. The convexity and concavity suggest different distances, so you subconsciously anticipate the items shifting in your line of sight based on your perspective.

I’ve also included a file to use this as a windows startup screen, because what better way to start your computer, than with an homage to people who think your computer is evil?

This is definitely neat, but... I don't see anything moving. It just looks like the still image I know it is.

Sometimes I don't see motion, either. Other times, the words move so much it gives me a headache. Try looking again later and see if the illusion works for you. If not, it'd be interesting to find out why some people can see motion and others can't.

Okay, here's the same comment again, this time without that annoying hyperlink running through the whole thing:

It's a show on the Discovery Channel. It's still on, but if you're picturing hilarious horse and buggy drive-bys with slingshots like I was, you'll be disappointed. For the most part, it's just (badly) staged confrontations in Amish costumes. They employ Mennonites who are allowed to use technology (which seems like exploiting a loophole, and thus makes me wonder how seriously they take their own religion), so you don't even get the interesting twist of an unarmed mafia.

I found this article about how a lot of Amish people are upset about the misconceptions it's spreading. (Although, I have to wonder how they found out about the television series in the first place.)

The one thing I saw on the show that was genuinely cool was a buggy competition. One guy made his buggy with a hot rod engine, big racing tires, and the works. Amusingly, it still had the slow vehicle triangle on the back. He was (rightfully) disqualified from the competition because it was no longer an Amish buggy by any stretch, but it was still fun. Unfortunately, I can't find a clip, so you'll have to wait for them to rerun the episode to see it.
