Autism Ambigram Tessellation

Description

About the drawing:

This ambigram tessellation is my version of the autism awareness puzzle. (The symbolism in the coloration and design of the original puzzle is explained here: [link]) The red and yellow lettering spells “AUTISM” one way, and the blue and green lettering spells it at a 180o angle. No matter which way the image is rotated, the right side up lettering appears convex, while the upside down lettering appears concave.

MS Paint, 896 x 554 pixels, 24 colors

The message:

Autism awareness is a good start, but simply being aware that there is such a thing isn’t enough. There are many misconceptions about autism, but for the sake of brevity, I will only discuss my most important point: Autism isn't entirely a negative thing.

I was medically diagnosed with Asperger’s, which is a high-functioning form of autism. My difficulty with recognizing social cues and responding accordingly, my constant compulsion to perform repetitive motions, my difficulty in keeping track of schedules, and other idiosyncrasies have given me a great deal of hardship in both the social and professional aspects of my life. However, my condition also liberates my mind. While social nuances elude me, more concrete and deterministic concepts like physics, calculus, geometry, and language, including distant and abstract concepts, come naturally.

With that in mind, I’d like to share with you an inspirational article my Dad sent me about famous people who had autism: [link] These were brilliant scientists, artists, musicians, authors, and other gifted professionals. To consider them disabled because of their social challenges is like calling an NBA star disabled because he’s too tall to drive a compact car or a fighter jet. If you get down on yourself for having autism, remember this: “Autism” starts with “Au”, and that’s the chemical symbol for gold.

This would make a great desktop wallpaper. Also, I myself have struggled with autism before, so this is something that I can relate to.
